Jackson - The grand tour

During the day we drove around Jackson and I got to see some of Corey's favorite places. It's nice to finally come to a state that have different gas stations, grocery stores and shopping! Haha

After driving and walking around, we went to a Greek restaurant and it was time to finally meet the Hansen's! It was cool to meet all the people that Corey was talking about in Hawaii. They were so nice and talkative, the dinner went by way to fast!
We dropped by at Women Night  on our way home so I got to check that out and also talk more to Coreys Mom and Sister. Afterwards we drove over to Corey's grandparents. It was a pretty interesting meeting. I got a lot of history from their family, I read old papers from the 1800's and 1900's in Danish, got to see all different kind of collections. They collect a lot a lot of stuff. And I got to see Grandma Hansen's Christmas tree. Yes, her Christmas tree! It's a tree completely dressed in Hershey ornaments and it stays up all year around. Their house, filled with things, was really interesting haha :)

The day came to an end with a movie night. I even got a chance to show our cheesy movie about Åmål! Well well.... It's always something! Oh wait a minute! What IS something, is the raccoons that we chilled with last night! They have raccoons coming up to the door partying on cat food during the nights. It was pretty cool to just lay there and take their pictures, I love raccoons!

Now today we are headed down to Batton Rouge to meet more relatives and to catch more of the southern culture! Corey is really excited to show me this place, I think it will be a lot of fun. Also, before heading home we will do New Orleans. Finally! Everyone talk about New Orleans, and now I will get to see it during Halloween!

A heads up for 'worried' family; I am unsure about reception down there, and I won't bring my computer. I'll check in whenever I can. The plan is to be back in Jackson on Monday.

Mississippi - An unpleasant departure, but a sweet arrival

I arrived safely in Jackson Mississippi! Finally! I was and am so excited about this trip! I am suppose to meet up with my friend Corey whom I backpacked Hawaii with.

Now this adventure start already at the airport, where I realize I have repacked my bags uneven. Yes people, I had overweight in my big bag. You who know me, know that I pack light when I fly. Great. Awesome. I died right there and then. All my bags were super tight packed since I'm not traveling, I'm moving! I felt just like the over packed donkeys I smile at when I check in my lightly packed luggage - if I have to check in at all! How would I get on this plane with all my stuff? Nate ran back and forth weighing my bag while I unpacked and repacked. This is how I got on the plane;

  • Scarfs around my neck together with my purse hidden under my London sweat shirt.
  • All my electronics in my jeans pockets
  • Clothes in my sweaters belly pocket
  • Books in my hand
  • A roller bag with broken wheels
  • An over over over packed laptop bag -with no lap top in it
  • My big winter coat with my small winter coat inside of it, and another sweat shirt on my arm
  • And as a cherry on top; I wore a pair of high heels. (Heels weigh more then flats)
It was a show.
Luckily, the flights carry on luggage shelfs got full before I boarded and they checked my one carry on luggage for free - all the way to Jackson! I didn't even have to carry it through my connection flight. Wooah, you all won't understand what a relief that was!

Arriving in Jackson was great. I talked to a bunch of nice people on the plane and it was so great to finally see Corey again. And kind of embarrassing, cause of all my heavy luggage... His last comment on the phone before my flight had been; "Well, just dump everything in a box and backpack the rest of your trip". I was like "Yeah right, say that when you see all my stuff!". And now he did. And he got himself a nice work out as well, helping me carry all my crap to the car. Sorry Corey..!

While getting into the car we saw an incoming thunderstorm and decided to pick up some stuff and go to the reservoir to watch it. It was an awesome lightning show, I love storms!

Chicago & Indiana

To go to Indiana is like coming home. It doesn't really become an adventure, it's just nice and comfortable.

I flew in to Chicago, Illinois where I got picked up by Nate, Britt and David. It was already 7.30 so While driving in Chicago I got to see the city all lit up. We decided to go out barhopping and clubbing - so much fun!
We drove back to Indiana in the morning, and guess who now can say she's driven in Chicago? ;)

There is not to much to say about my Indiana trip.. It was filled with welcome-parties, bar hopping, Halloween parties, birthday parties, birthday dinners, good bye parties, brunches, brunches and brunches. I had a really good time catching up with old and new friends. I will miss this place a lot.

I LOVE Jedi, this puppy is so super cosy!

I made Mario some Swedish pasta a lá Mother Nature

So that we could rule on beer pong! ;)

During one of our movie nights together with Brandi and Jayson,
things got out of hand with Chocolate jellO

Three generations at one of the birthday dinners

Playing cards while writing in my memory book and planning for Chicago

Nate, me and Fish
I will miss you guys.. A whole lot more then I say I will :p
Before leaving I got a chance to meet Nana and Papa again too. This whole week have been kind of strange - there's been no Rodriguez-es in Warsaw! Crazy! And to now enter Nana's and Papa's with no kids? Strange.. But it was nice to see them again before I left.

The day of my departure from Warsaw was pretty cool. The winds were crazy, as we had Tornado watch all day with no power. It felt like the wind was going through the house, that's how strong and loud it was. I was so looking forward to see a tornado, if so only a itty bitty tiny one, but no.. No tornadoes this time.

We spent the following night at a hotel in Chicago and it was nice to get to go around the city in actual day light. Now, we didn't have the best of luck with the sight seeing, but it was still a great trip!

Finally out of the car!

Late dinner at David's and Alex's new appartment

So if you are in Chicago, you have to go to Rain forest Café! It is an AMAZING restaurant! The food was delicious! They have a few domestic and international restaurants and if you are close by any of them - go go GO! It's kind of a jungle hard rock café thing, the whole place is filled with jungle decorations, music, aquariums etc.

Just love this cab ;)

My last weeks, Thank You

A super quick update!

From now on my blog will be shorter. The posts on Hawaii were so long and detailed, so that I could put all my information in a printed book together with all the amazing pictures. No more Novels! I "promise"! ;)

It had to come to an end. All good things have to. And doesn't it suck?!
I have had such an amazing time here in the US, I've won family and friends for a life time and I feel so fortunate to have had such an successful exchange.
My last couple of weeks in DC was a lot of fun, but also hard. It's been a loong good bye/ see ya process. Too long, but I feel happy to be able to say that. It's been long because of all loving people I've met!

Some of my good bye's included traveling:
Sebastian and I went for a weekend in the state of New York to see the Niagara falls and to visit Bella. Great great great experience! The falls were amazing and we had such a good time!
We also went to Philly with Mika to say good bye to Jaq. This also, was a great weekend!
My last weekend was filled filled filled, with fun, friends and family! We went to scary night at Cox Farms, my family hosted a good bye party, Liams soccer game, Halloween at Kings Dominion and movies and movie nights! I had a blast, the fun activities made it easier to say good bye.

Thank You Everyone!

Day 17 ~ Aloha Big Island - Aloha Oahu!

"Good morning Sunshine!" ...or never mind. That's not the phraseto greet Corey with at 5.50 am, when getting picked up by a happy Sherrie. He is so obviously not a morning person.. We all were cheerful (Nana and papa came to say good bye too) and I think that made it a little easier on him, but it took a few hours before he was back to his good ol' happy self.
We got some gifts and had breakfast before Ileene came to pick us up to take us to the air port.

Wehad now realized that we didn't have the same flights back to Oahu, and you can't rebook your flights. Well, we knew there was a reason for us to have the same last names: wouldnt it suck to fly back on a half full plane by your self? Yes it would, and that's why my dear Big Brother charmed the lady and she gave him new tickets instead of a stand by one. Oh, good charma!

Back at Oahu, Corey stayed and kept me company before my flight. We celebrated a good advenure with a nice dinner and tropical drinks. Relaxing in the tiny little park, eating ice cream and feeding birds, just enjoying our last couple of hours with more talk and stories.

I had such a great time in Hawaii, its been my biggest adventure in America, except actually coming here to live and work in DC. It was completely amazing! I loved every seond, even the less exotic once. I recommand everyone to go to Hawaii, it's a very special place. The nature, the people, the food and the culture! You'll love it!

Day 16 ~ Back to Hilo

Wow, last night was rainy! My phone got another taste of water and my neck got to taste the sourness from camping for a change. Thinking of how to make it back to Hilo, made my entire head feel sour! Pheeew, not the most comfortable morning.. breakfast was goodthough. A family came to fish shrimp in the river and they offered us coconuts as an addition to our poor meal. It felt great to drink fresh, it was our firstrefill of waterin a couple of days. When done drinking from the coconut we filled one of our empty water bottles with the rest. It was pretty  cool. Like a survival TV show moment on Discovery Channel. I like the coconut meat (Corey, not so much). I like the fact that the flavour of coconut is weakerthen the dried out coconut you buy at the store. It fills you up pretty well too, I've mentioned earlier how I've had coconut only, to breakfast.

We say good bye to the horses, who follows us a biton the way, and start our hike back tothe ginormeous hill. No joke, we we'rent hiking this thing if we didn't have to. Waited around for a little bit and sure enough, we got a ride (and some waterbottles!) to the top.Oh my, what would we have done without all the nice peopleon the road?!

A few more short hitches and we were back out on the 'main road'. We decided to try todays hitch luck before waiting for the bus. A little trickier today. In shorts and bikini, we made a hilo sign from my flight tickets and put on some cheer leading moves on the side of the road to get attention (Corey without the bikini of course). People drove by laughing with thumbs up, my friend got a little frustrated, wich made me find our cool moves and the situaton a little bit extra funny (I blame the sun and lack of water?). We had to actually 'work' for a hitch this time so to say. The sun was hot hot hot and the asfalt was burning under our feet. My gymshoes were wet from hanging outside during the rainy night and my flips were, like mentioned earlier, left behind in another valley. A nice girl finally pulls over and we cramp up in her old car. She had one of those 'hippie vans' and I took the trunk faster then fast, just so I could check out all her cool stuff!

Backin Hilo, we ended up, cause of my stubburness in a discoussion, in a new beach park. Best thing that could ever happen to us! here we met a hawaiian family who was catering a birthday party - and their own little family party on the beach. Sherrie and her family offered us to try all this crazy food and we stayed with them for the rest of the day. It was amazing! The food was delicious! They also offered to watch our packing while swimming before sunset, and I found a obanded pair of flips! Was it my lucky day or what?
it started to rain and when the darkness fell, they lend Corey a sweater, refilled our food and drinks, invited us to keep playing cards and we shared so many laughs and stories through out the night. fun things have to come to an end and technically the park was closing, so our new hawaiian aunts, uncles and Nanas and Papas, felt super bad about leaving us. We told them not to, we felt so lucky to have shared our afternoon with them.  We tried to convince them we were fine and they tried to give us tons safety information about the new beach. We thanked them again and said that we would be fine. Well, the best thing with family and friends: they want to keep you safe. All their plans changed and they threw our packs in Ilenes car and drove us to Nanas and Papas friends house. Turns out they were house sitting and they let us stay in the house just like that! We would have roof over our heads, rinning water - hot showers! and BEDS! We were overwhelmed and so thankful that they would leave us, strangers, in a house! Imagine that people! Would never happen were I come from. Not just only that, they left us with all the catering food and they scheduled us for pick up in the morning so that we could get rides for breakfast, souvenir shopping, and then for a ride to the air port. I can't tell you all how much this meant to us, Nana, Papa, Sherrie, John, Ileene with families. Thank you again! Our last day in Hilo, was amazing!
